The Health Sciences and Environmental Studies Division offers Ohlone certificate program that meets all
of the Department of Health Services regulations (AB 1557) that became effective in January 2002.

This program is approved by the Department of Health Services for the courses that include theory and lab practice plus a 108-hour externship. No transfer courses from other institutions are accepted for this certificate.

Completion of this certificate allows students to sit for the A.S.P.T. exam as required by California State Bill AB 1557. All courses
must be passed at Ohlone College with at least a grade of C to earn the certificate.

1. Apply knowledge of medical terminology when performing the duties of a certified Phlebotomy
Technician.
2. Define the scope and practices of a certified Phlebotomy Technician.
3. Demonstrate safe techniques while drawing blood from a variety of patients.
4. Demonstrate knowledge and skill set needed to fulfill the state requirements for practice as a certified
Phlebotomy Technician.
5. Complete successfully 50 venipunctures and 10 skin sticks on live patients as required by California

THE ROSS STORY

Initial Ross Education activities began in 1969 when J.M. Ross opened a school in Flint, Michigan, under the name Learning Foundations. That school provided “after school” academic instruction to kindergarten through 12th grade students. Six additional schools were opened from 1969 through 1971 by Mr. Ross.

In 1971, the name of the company was changed to Ross Learning, Inc., and the focus of the company shifted to providing prevocational and vocational training services to adults. Ross Learning was purchased by Howard J. Hulsman in 1973 and the organization began evolving into career training centers. In 1976, Ross opened the more comprehensive instructional services of the Ross Medical Education Centers. Throughout the 1980s and 1990s, Ross Learning, Inc. opened many schools across the Midwestern and Southern United States, all of which operated as Ross Medical Education Center, Ross Business Institute, or Ross Technical Institute.

In 2004, Mr. Hulsman sold Ross Learning, Inc., to three officers of the corporation: Christine Ossenmacher, Paul Mitchell, and Richard Lockman. In 2005, Paul Mitchell, Huron Capital Partners, LLC, and minority investors formed Ross Education, LLC and purchased the assets of Ross Learning, Inc. On May 1, 2008 an acquisition was made to purchase the Institute of Medical and Dental Technology located in Cincinnati, Ohio. On June 1, 2012 the name was officially changed to Ross Medical Education Center. Between 2008 and 2010, Ross Education, LLC. moved all of its schools into larger, brighter facilities, roughly three times their previous size. In 2011, the Ross Medical Education Center in Sylvania, Ohio changed its name to Ross College. Ross College Online was created to offer Associate Degree programs.

In early 2017, Ross acquired three former Brown Mackie College campuses located in Hopkinsville, KY, North Canton, OH, and Quad Cities, IA (Bettendorf). On February 1, 2017, the names of all three were officially changed to Ross College. The addition of these campuses also brought with them a few new programs. These programs included Nursing, Practical Nursing, Occupational Therapy Assistant, Veterinary Technology, and Business Management.

Today, Ross provides Medical Insurance Billing and Office Administration and Medical Assistant training in communities throughout Alabama, Indiana, Iowa, Kentucky, Michigan, Ohio, Tennessee, and West Virginia. At several of our campus locations, the Dental Assistant, Pharmacy Technician, and Veterinary Assistant programs are also offered. All Ross Medical Education Center and Ross College campuses are accredited by the Accrediting Bureau of Health Education Schools.

West Suburban College of Nursing is home to many student organizations and clubs including the Student Government Organization. The college offers numerous scholarships to eligible students. Some of them include Chancellor’s Scholarships, Ethel Fearing Brown Memorial Scholarship, Cathryn M. Johnson Scholarship, and Lucille W. Saxon Scholarship.

The College currently confers two degrees:

• The Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN)
• Master of Science in Nursing (MSN)

A Bachelor of Science degree in Health Informatics and Information Management (BSHIIM) will be granted when the first class of HIIM students complete all degree requirements.

Students may apply for admission to the BSN degree after earning 31 semester hours of liberal arts and science requirements inclusive of anatomy and physiology, chemistry, and microbiology. The college accepts transfer students from any community college or university that uses the Illinois articulation Initiative (www.itransfer.org) as a guideline for the prerequisite liberal arts & science courses.

West Suburban College of Nursing is owned and operated by West Suburban Medical Center, part of Resurrection Health Care. Nursing courses are offered at the college campus, located within West Suburban Medical Center, in Oak Park, Illinois. West Suburban Medical Center is a sophisticated hospital with clinics and specialty care centers.

Resurrection Health Care is composed of:

• 8 Hospitals (>2,000 beds)
• 2 Immediate Care Facilities
• 8 Skilled Nursing Facilities (>1,000 beds)
• 4 Retirement Homes

Students readily have access to clinical facilities in the system and throughout Chicago and the surrounding suburbs. These health-care facilities provide for enriched clinical experiences. Approximately 270 students are enrolled in the undergraduate nursing program. The student body is predominately drawn from the Chicago area, although enrollment from other parts of the tri-state area, and the nation, is not unusual.

The dental profession has several exciting career fields, and is a critical part of our overall health care. Within this profession, Dental Assistants and Dental Hygienists play a vital role. Dental Assistants perform a variety of patient care, office, and laboratory duties. Among other duties, they assist dentists as they examine and treat patients. They make patients comfortable, prepare them for treatment, and obtain their dental records, and instruct them on postoperative and general oral health care. Job prospects for dental assistants should be excellent, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. In fact, employment is expected to grow much faster than average through the year 2012. Demand for trained dental assistants has never been greater, and that means salaries, benefits and career advancement are very attractive.

Veterinary Careers

Veterinary science today is a rewarding career field that is just as sophisticated and challenging as medical science. To provide modern veterinary care, veterinarians need skilled veterinary technicians and technologists who perform many of the same duties for a veterinarian that a nurse would for a physician, including laboratory and clinical procedures; and conduct clinical work in a private practice under the supervision of a veterinarian-often performing various medical tests along with treating and diagnosing medical conditions and diseases in animals. Job growth in Veterinary Technicians is projected to grow much faster than average, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. This means, career opportunities, salary, and job advancement should be excellent in this area.
