Ohio State College of Barber Styling was originally founded in 1959 when our school was located on South High Street in downtown Columbus, Ohio. In 1993, the Ohio State College of Barber Styling was moved to its current location and was purchased in 1998 by its current owner, Robert D. Glenn.

Facilities

Ohio State College of Barber Styling offers a spacious facility in which to learn and provide clinic services to the public. Theory and Practical classes are held in a specially designed classroom, which is separate from the clinic area. The school is a one-story facility of 5,000 square feet and there are 40 barber stations used for clinical practice.

The maximum class size is thirty students. Each student is assigned a station to work from, completely equipped with a professional shampoo bowl, hydraulic barber chair, mirror, and back bar unit with individual sanitizers.

The school is equipped with eight additional stations for the clinical/classroom practice portion of the curriculum. The theory classroom is provided with a chalkboard, overhead projector, slide projector, television, and VCR/DVD. Wigs, mannequins, and all supplies necessary for practice are provided for classroom training. Separate areas contain lockers that are provided for each student. The lunchroom provides a seating area with a refrigerator and two microwave ovens for student use. Vending machines, stocked regularly, provide assorted snacks and beverages. Our institution also provides handicapped accessible restroom facilities for both men and women.

• High School Diploma or GED, prior to start date
• 17 years of age, prior to start date.
• 1,000 hour program requires a valid Ohio Cosmetology License.
• $250.00 deposit, to be applied to the total cost of tuition.
• Must complete an initial interview and tour the facility.
• Meet ALL State Barber Board Requirements.
• Be 17 years of age prior to start date.
• If the applicant has a prior felony conviction, State Barber Board approval is required.
• All documents are submitted as requested.
• Drivers License

Tuition

The Ohio State College of Barber Stylings enrollment representative must approve part-time schedules. Part-time schedules are defined as a reduction in the total hours required to be enrolled each month.

An additional fee of $600.00 is charged for the approval of Part-Time schedules.

Refresher Course

($600.00 for 200 clock hours must be paid at the time of enrollment.)

A refresher course is offered by the Ohio State College of Barber Styling for those licensed barbers in the State of Ohio wishing to return to school to refresh their skills.

The refresher course may also be required by the State Barber Board for those students unsuccessful in their attempts to acquire a passing mark during their State Board Examination.

The purpose of the school is to build a foundation of excellence in Barbering and to be the preferred source of education by guaranteeing competent graduates. It is our aim to provide students with the knowledge and technical proficiency that will make them employable upon graduation.

Education – BASIC BARBER / STYLIST

This is an entry level course in the arts and sciences of barbering. Successful completion of the course and a passing score on the State Board Examination qualifies the graduate to perform barbering service for pay in any establishment licensed by the Board of Barbering and Cosmetology. Career opportunities may include: employment in a Barber shop, independent Barber renting a station, Barber Shop owner, eligible for cosmetology cross training or Barber Instructor course.

Admissions

Borner’s Barber College considers each applicant on the basis of ability, character recommendation by references, general aptitude, and admissions exams.

Many factors such as your desire, motivation, and aptitudes will be considered before you are accepted as a student. We accept students only if we believe they will succeed.

All applicants considered for admission to our College must take an entrance exam. For all courses the applicant must have a proof of education or its equivalent, proof of age and have a social security number. The student must submit a high school diploma or GED test score or equivalency results (e.g. California High School Proficiency Exam results) within the first week of class or an extension must be requested and approved by the School Director.

The colleges were initially established by A. B. Moler, who led the way for formal training of barbers by opening the first barber college in the nation in Chicago, Illinois in 1893. With the success of his barber college in Chicago, Mr. Moler turned his attention and entrepreneurial abilities to the growing West. The “National Barber School” had been established just before the turn of the century at 218 J Street in the young and bustling city of Sacramento, California. Mr. Moler purchased the National Barber School in 1910, renaming it the Moler Barber College.

Courses are offered in basic barbering, advanced barbering, hairstyling and hairdressing, post-graduate, and refresher courses. In addition, we have developed and offer an outstanding teacher-training program for persons desirous of becoming qualified and licensed instructors to teach in barber colleges and post-secondary education programs.

The secondary objectives of the various training programs are to pass the licensing examination and to prepare the student for entry-level positions, expose the student to industry-related products, promote professional ethics and standards, and instill a strong sense-of-self for their future in this rewarding profession/industry.

The College maintains a continuous program of research, evaluation, and development in the various fields of academic teaching and in the barber-stylist and hairdressing industry. The training programs are designed to provide a step-by-step method for students to progress as their skills develop. The course design allows individualized instruction when needed or practical.

The major emphasis of the training course is in clinical or practical hairstyling and hairdressing. This is necessary to ensure success when the student enters the professional ranks of barbering, hairstyling, and hairdressing as a licensed professional.

The College is proud of its accomplishments and its reputation for educating and training persons to be successful barbers, hairstylists, and hairdressers, and for preparing them to become leaders within the industry and the community.

Course Objectives

The ultimate objective of the Moler barber colleges is to prepare students to pass the California Board of Barbering and Cosmetology examination. This qualifies them to practice barbering in the state of California as licensed barbers.

An additional objective is to provide training that enables graduates to function effectively in today’s full-service salons. This requires that students be trained in the basics of every service performed in salons today. It is also our desire that students be exposed to sound business practices.

Admission Requirements

To qualify for admission to the Colleges, an enrolling student must meet the following requirements:
An interview and acceptance by the school.
Prospective students must have obtained a minimum of a tenth-grade education or a GED certificate.
Students may start school on any Tuesday, providing an open position is available.
The Student Enrollment Agreement must be signed prior to starting date.
