Balston Spa Central School District
The Ballston Spa Central School District currently serves close to 4,400 students from pre-kindergarten through grade 12. The area has been growing throughout the last ten years, both in the number of housing units and population, with over 22,000 people now living within the 65 square miles of the districts boundaries. A diverse socioeconomic population resides within the growing suburban district, which encompasses portions of the Towns of Milton, Malta, Ballston, and Charlton and also includes the quaint Village of Ballston Spa. Over 140,000 people live within 15 minutes of Ballston Spa, supporting and working at over 5,500 businesses. The district is 30 minutes away from the Capital District with a vast array of educational and cultural opportunities available.
There are four elementary schools (grades Pre-K-5) which include: Milton Terrace North and Milton Terrace South, Malta Avenue and Wood Road, the Middle School (grades 6-8) and the High School (grades 9-12). The Ballston Spa High School opened in 1998 with state of the art computer and science labs, a modern library media center and auditorium, and a swimming pool. The former High School was reconfigured and now houses the Middle School.
More than 700 educators, administrators and support staff make up the districts dedicated team of employees. Class sizes average 19 students at the elementary level and 24 at the secondary level.
Ballston Spa is fully addressing the New York State standards that promote excellence and equity through education. The elementary level features the incorporation of current best practices, balanced literary instruction, interdisciplinary teaching and increased use of technology by students and teachers. Each school has at least one computer lab and numerous computers for classroom use. At the Middle School, students are organized into teams consisting of core academic teachers, allowing the staff the opportunity to know students more personally. Both the High School and Middle School are organized on a modified, rotating, block schedule, which provides teachers and students with more concentrated instructional time and opportunities for interdisciplinary work.
Special education students are included in general education classrooms at all levels, which adds to the breadth of educational experience for all students. In addition, special classes, resource classes, consulting services and a full compliment of related services are available to students with disabilities within the district.
Academic intervention and support services are widely available at all levels to support student achievement. A summer school program has been developed over the past few years, focusing on providing remedial, acceleration and enrichment opportunities for students.
Parent groups are active in each building, and volunteers are a familiar sight. In addition, the district has formed partnerships with a number of local businesses and community organizations. Community members are also actively involved in the schools through participation on school committees and task forces. The Ballston Spa Educational Foundation (BSEF) was established to seek resources to provide academic enrichment for our students. The BSEF has raised and distributed over $230,000 to the school district in recent years. These partnerships enhance educational experiences by involving students in mentoring programs, career exploration programs and citizenship activities.
Staff members also enjoy continued growth and learning. In-service training and staff development are a district priority. In addition, the district supports teachers pursuing the National Certification process as an indication of educational excellence. More than 15 area colleges provide even more options for professional growth.
Their district can boast of excellence in our curricula and student services. Their new and upgraded learning environments are designed to support academic and enrollment growth. Our staff is recruited based on their solid experience and potential to enhance the success of our students. Parents and students are discovering the benefits of a Ballston Spa education, and enrollment continues to climb.
