Career Revolutions in Health Care : Health Information Technician

The records of patients in Hospitals, private clinics, private residence of doctors etc are stored usually in files. The electronic storage of the data of each & every patient is referred to as the digital storage of data. It is stored generally in the form of a database. There will be a code for each patient & it can be a reference no of the patients choice or sometimes the hospital will provide. When the number is entered, the full details of the patients will be displayed. The data should be definitely updated. The data can be stored in Hospitals or the data can be stored on the personal computer of the doctor. A new concept of patients storing the data has also been put into focus.

An innovative approach to the supporting technology of Health care in handling records. A very low percentage of Hospitals & Doctors have adopted this method in United States. In countries of the European Union, these methods have become a part of their life. Adoption of this method leads to

  • Less paper work.
  • Reduced errors.
  • Less expenditure as it will cut costs made by manual mistakes.
  • More income & more sophisticated health care.
  • No more difficulty in reading prescriptions.
  • Improving the outcome, particularly for patients & insurance companies.

As every coin has two sides, technology also has its drawbacks. Some of the factors are:

  • The total expenditure can be more than expected, as there is the cost of the installation of the hardware, software, support system & there can be flaws when the system runs.
  • Doctors & the concerned staff have to be crystal clear about the whole system.
  • More time consuming especially for the doctors as they have to find extra time for technical study like data entry & system maintenance.
  • There is exception of small clinics coz of the financial barriers.

Even though the doctors will receive a fat pay packet, as they have an additional technical qualification, they have to sacrifice their valuable time with patients. Thus a new challenging role of a HIT plays an important part.
