Medical Radiography Courses

The popularity of radiography in the field of medicine has grown exponentially. Radiographers were encouraged and trained to adopt the new technology of conducting diagnostic tests involving X-rays. It started with fluoroscopy, computed tomography and mammography. Medical radiographers later added ultrasound and magnetic resonance imaging to the list of specializations.

Medical radiographers are experts who make use of imaging instruments to x-ray various body parts of human beings, in order to diagnose health problems properly. The procedure incorporates medical imaging actions to identify health related problems. Besides this, professionals also prepare the patients for radiology examinations by positioning them under the machines and ensuring appropriate doses of radiation. In addition, medical radiographers are also responsible for maintaining the records of patients and radio-graphic machines.

Two areas in which students can choose to specialize are MRI (Magnetic Resonance Imaging) and (CT) Computerized Tomography. In order to achieve this, the student would need to study for a further 12 months. Imaging of body parts for making a diagnosis best describes what radiography or radiology is. There are a variety of different techniques and devices to be used in order to arrive at a conclusive diagnosis

Many subjects are covered on the program, the two most important ones being technical skills and radiation protection. The other subjects are: anatomy and physiology, imaging processes, managing of patients, radio biology, physics, pathology and radiation physics. These subjects are considered the basics of the program.

Pupils taking the industrial radiography course will learn all about archeology, security and inspection of food. Medical students of radiography will be taught how to explain procedures to patients, how to correctly position the patients for x-rays and preparation of the patient for x-rays.

During the basic course, students will learn the basics of radiography. These basics include anatomy and physiology, patient management, imaging processes, radiation protection, radio biology, and pathology and radiation physics. Technical skills and radiation protection are two big factors that are emphasized throughout the course.

A radiology student will learn the necessary skills to prepare patients for x-rays and the correct positioning of the patient, application of non-radioactive materials and explaining the various processes to patients. Industrial radiologists will learn skills necessary to work in the fields of archeology, security, food inspection and more.

On completion of the course, the new graduate will be registered as a Radiographer or Radiological Technologist and will then be able to find employment in doctors offices, clinics, and hospitals or for a mobile x-ray company. Fields of medical imaging also include pediatric, trauma or surgical radiography, ultrasound, mammography, angiography and fluoroscopy.
