After completing the course cosmetologists can work from their own house, offer a mobile service, in saloons, spas, in television and film industry, and cruise ships etc.

In order to become a cosmetologist one must first get a high school diploma. Then complete a two year school or colleges training program. Alternatively, you may choose to enter an apprenticeship training program which involves both in-class and on the job training under a state licensed cosmetologist. The school training program may or may not include on the job training. Cosmetology schools or technical schools offering cosmetology program are found throughout the United States. Most of the students opt for the formal training school program rather than going for the apprenticeship. After graduation every cosmetologist must successfully pass a written exam and a practical demonstration of their skills. After completion of your course you may work in the fields of hair cutting, hair coloring and design, salon management and ownership, spa services, manicuring and pedicuring, product sales and development.

Licensing requirements for cosmetologists differ according to the state where they choose to work. In order to obtain a license as a cosmetologist in the state of Wisconsin the applicant must submit proof of completion of 1800 hours of training in a cosmetology school.
