There are top 10 lists for everything imaginable. You have the world’s top 10 most beautiful people, and the top 10 most fuel efficient cars. The lists go on and on. But what does the top ten really mean? Sometimes it means an organization that is in the business of ranking other businesses, collects a huge amount of data, crunches numbers, and comes out with a top ten list. Are these really the top ten? Well, maybe. It all depends on the criteria that are important to you.

Whenever a top 10 list is developed, you set the criteria that you will go by, to determine who gets on the list. In the case of schools, some criteria may be cost of tuition, number of students in a classroom, distinguished faculty members and a state-the-art facility for advanced learning. Another top 10 list may be compiled by students whose only criterion is; what schools has the best looking babes. Of course, this top 10 list wouldn’t be of much use to anybody, except maybe aficionados of the human female form.

Another situation with top 10 lists is; they may be very fleeting. They are like a game of musical chairs. You can be on the list today, and nowhere to be found, tomorrow. So, keep this in mind when perusing a top 10 list. With this in mind, we present the top 10 dental schools in us:

University of Pennsylvania, School of Dental Medicine (UPenn)
University of Maryland at Baltimore (UMB), Baltimore College of Dental Surgery
University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill (UNC), School of Dentistry
University of Michigan, School of Dentistry
Harvard University, School of Dental Medicine (HSDM)
The University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio (UTHSCSA) Dental School
University of California at San Francisco School of Dentistry
The University of Toronto, Faculty of Dentistry
University of Washington (UW), School of Dentistry
New York University College of Dentistry (NYU)

There will probably be students of dental schools not on this list, that feel their school should have definitely made this list, but this may be just a case of different criteria used for this particular list. Any decisions made on something as important as finding the right dental school, will need a lot more research than just reading a top 10 list.

Another top 10 list that is quite interesting is; the top 10 list of the easiest dental schools to get into. I have seen one list, and it lists at least one of the dental schools ranked in the top 10

Whenever there is a top 10 list, it’s important to understand what criteria are used to determine rank. For example US News & World Report is a source that is constantly quoted. In 2008 and also 2012 they released a report on the top art schools in the nation. US News & World Report stated they used a peer assessment survey. What that means is they would mail out surveys to the deans and other important faculty members of art schools, 2 surveys per school, asking them to rate a list of schools. They were asked to rate the academic quality of these schools and would then crunch the numbers and come out with a report of the best art schools in the nation.

Other criteria used to rate schools, were:

Tuition costs and availability of financial aid
Teacher Assistantships
Prestigious faculty
Cutting-edge curricula
Impressive facilities
And other criteria

There are plenty of guides out there that give their own top 10 reports, and others collect these guides, combing through all the information they can get, and put it through their own algorithm, with the end result being a new and improved guide, listing the best schools in the nation. Whether they are really any more accurate, is hard to tell. It would take a large research project to follow graduates through their life to see how successful they have become and determine if going to one of the top ten schools really made a difference.

After collecting an enormous amount of data and doing our own number crunching we have come up with a list of the top 10 art schools in us, and the rankings are:

A career within the music industry, whether you’re a performer, instructor, or a combination of them both, can be exciting, rewarding and very lucrative. One thing you need to keep in mind when considering a career in the music field is where you will obtain your education. Of course if you have a natural talent for music and you’re not going to be teaching, you don’t necessarily need a degree, however, if you plan on becoming a music instructor or you want to improve your chances of succeeding in the industry, you will want to earn a degree in music. There are many schools in the United States that offer some outstanding music programs, but there are also some that offer programs that are less-than-desirable. You definitely want to ensure that you steer clear of less desirable schools and attend only the absolute best if you hope to achieve your goals in music.
An honors progam is an advanced undergraduate degree program meant for the more accomplished students. Honors programs typically have harder entry requirements and completion criteria than regular degree programs. An honors degree is viewed favorably by employers. So if you are looking at pursuing a degree program and have had a consistently good academic record, you should consider an honors program. In this article, we discuss which are the top honors colleges of the country.

A Review of Fifty Public University Honors Programs is a book edited by John Willingham and released in May 2012. This book provides useful information to college counselors, educational consultants and even honors degree aspirants on which are the top honors colleges in the United States and why. John broadly uses two sets of parameters to rank the various top honors programs – overall excellence and honors factors. In overall excellence he has considered factors like curriculum, prestigious undergraduate and postgraduate scholarships, honors retention and graduation rates, honors housing, study-abroad programs and priority registration. In honors factors John has used the same parameters except scholarships to look at individual programs. In the latter each program is also rated for the impact it has on the parent university–that is, how does the honors program rank vis-a-vis the university of which it is a part?

The fifty top honors college programs reviewed are Alabama, Arizona, Arizona State, Arkansas, Auburn, Binghamton, Clemson, Colorado, Connecticut, Delaware, Florida, Georgia, Georgia Tech, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Iowa State, Kansas, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, Michigan State, Minnesota, Mississippi, Missouri, Nebraska, North Carolina, North Carolina State, Ohio State, Oregon, Penn State, Pitt, Purdue, Rutgers, South Carolina, Stony Brook, Texas A&M, UC Davis, UC Irvine, UCLA, UC San Diego, UC Santa Barbara, University at Buffalo, UT Austin, Vermont, Virginia, Virginia Tech, Washington, Washington State, and Wisconsin.

As per the book the top ten honors programs based on overall excellence are:

1. University of Michigan
2. University of Virginia
3. University of Texas at Austin
4. University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill
5. Arizona State University
6. University of Washington
7. University of Minnesota
8. Michigan State University
9. University of South Carolina
10. University of Georgia

Based on honors factors, the top ten honors programs are the following:

1. University of South Carolina
2. University of Texas at Austin
3. University of Michigan
4. Arizona State University
5. Michigan State University
6. University of Georgia
7. University of Delaware
8. University of Virginia
9. University of Minnesota
10. Pennsylvania State University

While this is not the final word on the top honors colleges, it still is an objective analysis of the top 50 universities. The list suffers from some shortcomings such as being focussed on public universities, and not including some better known names like Utah. But that does not take away from the usefulness and relevance of its findings.

Find out the hardest degree majors in college. Chemistry, mathematics and economics are among the hardest while education, language and English the easiest based on a study by a university professor.

Which degree majors are the hardest? And which are the easiest? This evokes the curiosity of many students and even academics. Those who have gone through it know that earning a college degree takes a lot of hard work and dedication. Now-a-days there are plenty of online schools which purportedly make earning a degree easy. But in reality, whether you pursue an online or a traditional on-campus degree program, being successful in it will mean a lot of honest effort. However, that does not mean all college degree majors require the same amount of time and effort. Some of them are especially hard to pursue while there are a few that seem to be relatively easy. Here we take a look at which are the hardest degree majors and which are the easiest.

A recent study by a Wake Forest Univesity Professor looked at the average GPA and attrition rates in different college majors for a ten year(1997-2007) period. It assumes that the higher the average grades obtained in a degree major the easier the major is and vice-versa. Based on this the top 10 hardest college degree majors are:

Chemistry

Mathematics

Economics

Psychology

Biology

Geology

Philosophy

Geography

Physics

Political science

At the other end of the spectrum, we have the following easiest degree majors:

Education

Language

English

Music

Religion

Sociology and Anthropology

Art

History

Computer Science

Philosophy and Religious Studies

In general terms it can be said that math and science based degree majors are more difficult than those based on liberal arts. There are of course exceptions such as computer science which shows as among the easiest and philosophy and political science which are among the hardest.

However, this is only part of the story. While the above discussion broadly throws light on the difficulty (and easiness) of a few degree majors, it may not hold true for all individuals. For instance, there are at least a few among you who find maths easy. Similarly, some may find history a tough and boring subject. The above lists, if anything, just indicate the amount of interest among students in various degree majors. Another point to consider is the fact that earning a harder degree may stand you a better chance of getting a job.

To conclude this discussion on the top hardest majors in college, while we have drawn up the list of the hardest and easiest majors based on statistics, this may not be true of an individual. It is therefore important for you to consider your own topics of interests and the career prospects of each subject before deciding which major you should pursue for your college degree
